Introduction

This transparent map will allow you to add a layer to your GPS unit showing the boundaries of wilderness areas in Illinois. Use the map to see your position relative to wilderness boundaries in the field. You can use this map in conjunction with other maps, such as topo maps, you may have on your GPS unit already.

Installation

PC Version
  • Clicking on the link above downloads and runs the installer (.exe), which unzips the appropriate files to your computer and registers them with MapSource.
MAC Version
  • Clicking on the link above downloads a zip file (.zip). Unpack this zip file using Stuffit Expander (or something similar), then double-click the .gmapi file. MapManager should launch and a window should open up that says 'Install these maps?'. Click the install button and the map will be installed into Basecamp.

Version and Updates

The map version date is displayed on the initial installation screen. Maps are updated whenever new wilderness areas are added to the National Wilderness Preservation System or when older boundaries are revised. Follow us on Twitter to make sure you receive announcements about updated maps. To update to the current version of this map, uninstall the older version (use the “Uninstall” utility in the folder where you installed the maps the first time) before downloading and installing the current version from the links provided.

Data Source

The data used to compile this map comes from the federal wilderness management agencies (Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, and National Park Service) and is maintained by the University of Montana's Wilderness Institute through http://www.wilderness.net.

My POIs: These are maps that contain points that are displayed on the 24K USGS maps. They are also transparent. I have also added other things. I found a file with the locations of 54,000 springs in MO and about 50,000 sink holes. I have included them. These maps cover, IL, MO, CO, IN, TN, DC, Iowa, KY, and OH.

These are transparent maps that show up on top of City Navigator which you still use for route calculation. They have topo lines and hydrology (streams, rivers, lakes, etc). The topo lines are from the USGS and they are more accurate than what is on the 24K USGS maps. I generally use a 10 foot contour interval. The hydrology is high resolution (equal to or better than the 24K USGS). Some places do not have the high resolution data). I have also done lots of corrections to the hydrology by looking at ExpertGPS, Google Earth, and field checks. What it looks like in the GPS is City Navigator with topolines and much better hydrology. This is great for caching as many times it helps you figure out how to get to a cache as you can see the terrain and where the water is. That makes it easier to figure out how to get to a cache as a straight line is not always the best way.

My GPS a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx Unit will no longer display the TOPO U.S. 24K Northeast mapset I installed and registered back on Jan. 3, 2010. The map was installed from the 256 Mb MicroSD card and was displaying fine. At the time I had installed a 2GB MicroSD card in the internal slot. It worked OK. Yesterday, I removed the 2GB MicroSD card replacing it with an 8GB MicroSD Card. I had copied all the files from the 2 Gb to the 8Gb card. Upon powering up the Unit, no map is displayed, the error message 'Can't Unlock Maps' appears and no mapset is shown as installed in the Setup/Map menu. When I bought the TOPO map on the MicroSD Card, I made two backup copies onto CDs. I've tried several times to make a fresh copy onto the MicroSd card from the CD but it doesn't mattter. No map shows up. To make it more confusing, I know the proper Garmin folders with the mapset ARE on the card in the GPS? I've run out of ideas. Send Help!

Comments

  • Was this a map that Garmin originally provided on a memory card? I'm not clear on that from your post. If so, then that is the problem. The maps that Garmin provides on cards will only work on the original card. You can copy them to another card, but you will get the 'can't unlock' error. Hardware copy protection is used to permanently associate the files with the original card.
What I don't understand however is the part where you say you copied it to another 2GB card. That shouldn't have worked either.
Garmin has a lot of conflicting info on their site regarding SD cards. However this FAQ suggests that 4GB is the largest card you should use on the 60csx. Perhaps that is an issue as well.
    https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={9dec4ad0-954a-11dd-f60b-000000000000}
Garmin mode devices pertaining to this FAQ are the following devices:
    GPSMAP 60CSx, 60Cx, 76CSx, 76Cx
eTrex Vista HCx, Vista Cx, Legend HCx, Legend Cx, Venture Cx
    Astro 220
    Rino 520HCx, 530HCx
There are limitations to the size of microSD card used and to the number of detailed mapping segments that can be recognized by a device.
If at the most recent device software version, these limitations are:
It is recommended the maximum size for the microSD card should be 4 gigabytes (GB)
If you can't get it to work, there are free maps of New Jersey (including a few of my own) here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/nj
  • Yes, I did purchase the map from Garmin on the 256Mb card. Perhaps that's the problem then. I'lllook at the maps you suggested. Thanks for the help.
  • TOPO U.S. 24K Northeast mapset I installed and registered back on Jan. 3, 2010. The map was installed from the 256 Mb MicroSD card and was displaying fine.
I'm sorry Tom, but something just doesn't add up in the information you've provided. Maybe you are just getting the details confused? I also purchased the Garmin 24k topo NorthEast map on a preloaded card. There is no way that this map will fit on a 256MB card. The map is 1.68GB and is provided on a 2GB card.
Also, you do not need to 'install and register' maps that are provided on a data card. In fact, that is one advantage of them - just plug it in and use the map. There is no way to register this kind of map.
Since you have a 60csx, I suspect it may have included a 256MB card, so maybe that's the source of your confusion? Or maybe you actually purchased the DVD version and installed/registered that on a card?
  • Yes, you are correct, it did come on a 2Gb MicroSD Card..I had things mixed up. However, before I installed it in the 60CSx, I did copy the card to CD. Now, I made sure that all 'hidden files and folders' were visable before I copied, so I can't understand why copying from CD back to a fresh card won't restore the maps. I wrote to Garmin Support, I'll see what they say. Thanks for the link to the other maps, they're great!
  • I explained why what you did wouldn't work before. I'll try again with a bit more detail. Every SD card has a unique hardware ID number associated with it. It is not in a 'file', it's part of the low level data on the card itself. When Gamin installs the map on a card, it uses a copy protection scheme that embeds the card ID number in the map itself.
When you put the card in a GPS, the unit checks to see if the hardware ID number of the card matches the number embedded in the map. If not, then it displays the 'can't unlock maps' error.
It is not possible to move the maps from one card to another one, because each card has a different hardware ID number. The fact that you first copied them to CD's is irrelevant. The map files you copied are only valid when they are used on the original card. This is one drawback of purchasing maps that are preloaded on cards. You cannot back them up and move them to a different card.
Glad you enjoyed the GPSFileDepot maps. They are free and don't have any restrictions like this.
  • Well, after your excellent explanation, I got out the 2Gb card and copied back the EULA and GARMIN folders to it, put it into the 60CsSx and it opened the Garmin TOPO 24K Northeast map! :) It made sense that the cards hardware # and the encryption # on the map software had to match up.
I believe I have to stick with the 2Gb card if I want to use the Garmin map? I can use the 8Gb card with the GPSFileDepot maps, I think, since that combination seemed to work. Thanks again.
Are there any better after market software programs for my computer that are easier to use than MapSource?
  • Great, glad you got it working. You can certainly copy the files back to the original card. I didn't understand that you had removed them from the original.
Your 60csx is an older design that only recognizes a single .img file. Newer models can have multiple .img files. But on the 60csx, if you want to have multiple maps on the device and be able to choose between them, you would use Mapsource or MapInstall to bundle them all into a single file. An 8GB card should work (but note the Garmin FAQ I posted which suggests using a 4GB card).
But the problem is, with your pre-loaded card you cannot combine the Garmin 24k topo with another map, since the data is not installed on your computer and not in the correct format to bundle with other maps.
In the future, I suggest you buy the DVD version of Garmin's topo products. They are not locked and can be installed on any cards that you have. They can also be combined with any other maps on your computer and sent to your 60csx in a single bundle.
Basecamp and Mapsource are really your only choices for displaying Garmin maps on your computer and sending them to the GPS. Garmin's format is proprietary. They 'look the other way' regarding the free maps at GPSFileDepot, but they might call their lawyers if somebody else published a computer program for managing Garmin maps.
  • Just out of curiosity, would 3rd party software or maps really be a problem?
I'm just thinking of all the 3rd party apps that read, make, and edit Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat document (map) types.
  • I guess only Garmin could answer that question. Perhaps the reason that there's no 3rd party software is simply because Mapsource and Basecamp already fulfill those needs?
Garmin's software license seems pretty clear about what you cannot do however..
You acknowledge that this Software is the property of Garmin and is protected under United States of America copyright laws and international copyright treaties. You further acknowledge that the structure, organization, and code of the Software are valuable trade secrets of Garmin and that the Software in source code form remains a valuable trade secret of Garmin. You agree not to decompile, disassemble, modify, reverse assemble, reverse engineer, or reduce to human readable form the Software or any part thereof or create any derivative works based on the Software.
  • The answer would have to come from a neutral arbitrator or judge. I'm sure Garmin would like to extend their authority far beyond what the law allows.
The EULA applies to MapSource and BaseCamp, or the maps?
Regardless, it seems someone could DL a Garmin compatible map from GPSFileDepot or other source and write a program that could display that map on a PC and upload that map to a Garmin device, without violating any legal protections afforded to Garmin.
  • Well, the fact is that no such third party program exists. Explain it any way you choose.. :)
I believe that same language is found in the SLA for all of Garmin's software (device firmware, maps, desktop software).

  • Garmin has a lot of conflicting info on their site regarding SD cards. However this FAQ suggests that 4GB is the largest card you should use on the 60csx. Perhaps that is an issue as well.
I've been using an 8GB card with my 60CSx for years. No problems at all. I have the latest City Navigator NA update and all of TOPO US on it. Broken up into four files, of course due to the tile limitations per map, though.
